We've had policies-in place-since Dan Quayle was Vice-President. Twenty years ago, this week, then-Vice President Dan Quayle announced the FDA's policy on genetically engineered food as part of his "regulatory relief initiative." The policy, Quayle explained, was based on the idea that genetic engineering is no different than traditional plant breeding, and therefore required no new regulations.
So no new regulations have been initiated nationally since. The problems associated with GMO's, whether through Monsanto's Glyphosate or artificial hormones, or with the growing Health Issues associated with the Food, as well as exposure to the Herbicides the GMO's were engineered to resist, traits that have since crossed over into the weed patch, a patch that has grown to over 120 million hectares.
The states are starting to demand new safety checks before new technologies are deployed, as well as common-sense labeling to give American Consumers the same option of choice available to consumers in 40 other countries.
It's time for severing the relationship between Big Agri-Business and Big Government.
Our Health, Lives and Future may depend on it.
