Justine Dorsey (http://justinedorsey.com, http://www.myspace.com/justinedorsey)
I' m not going to try to reinvent the wheel here. Justine Dorsey is such a phenomena, if you haven't heard her or seen her, I can't imagine what you've been doing. If you have a daughter 5yrs old or older and you don't buy her the “Color Wheel” CD for her Birthday or Christmas, she'll likely be embarrassed for you.
As a man and speaking for most men I know, if any of us still have blood in our veins, we'd be proud to tell the world, “This is OUR daughter!”
She's bright, inspiring, has a stringent work ethic, passion AND compassion, humor, and an honest love for her fans, friends, and family. When asked what she liked most about having a hit album with songs she'd written, she replied she'd received an E-Mail from someone who'd been playing some music, but had been inspired by her works to start some writing, herself. She thought that was the best thing.
Here's some things others have written about her, Video links to interviews, scenes from “Brothers and Sisters”, and her playing her music. Be sure to go to her “Space” and listen to some of the new songs, and if you DO have a 5-16 year old,be a mensch and buy her “Color Wheel”.
MEET JUSTINE DORSEY: AN ENGLISH ROSE!
(By: Lauren Pinney, Hollywood Teenzine)
Justine Dorsey is just your typical, everyday, 14 year old girl, with dreams, passions and a gleaming individuality! Her hopes and dreams of hitting the screen and her passion for music has led her to be successful not only on screen, playing a re-occurring role in ABC’s Brothers & Sisters, and taking part in several musicals, but also in the recording studio where she is expressing her love for music in a whole new way!
Justine was just a kid when she told her mother that she wanted to act. “ I would ask her how the people got in that little box, and I told her I wanted do that,” Justine told us during our recent interview. It didn’t take very long for her parents to start sending Justine out to auditions for small shows, where talent scouts just happened to discover her ability to perform. Her first gig as she remembers was a commercial for Dell computers. “I remember we had to go into the mall and they brought in a Santa and snow, and they dressed me up. I was so excited. I just loved it. And being just a little kid and seeing all this was larger than life and too good to be true!” Justine’s career had just begun!
At the age of seven Justine started singing and doing musical theater in addition to her budding acting career. “I went into an audition for a musical instead of just acting, and my mom couldn’t go in with me. I was really nervous. They asked me to sing a few bars of the Annie song because I really liked Annie. I sang Annie and my mom had her ear pressed against the door. My parents really had no idea that I could sing, they just realized how much I loved it.”
Justine’s music has become one of her greatest passions these days. Learning to play the guitar and piano, and having previously learned how to play the French horn in her 7th grade band, Justine has embraced more than just her ability to sing by testing all of the waters in the musical world. “It is really hard, but it will be fun to be able to play my songs that I have been working so hard over. It makes me feel good that I am able to say that I play guitar and piano. It makes me understand music so much more - not just singing because you can really understand music from there - but the instrument thing is just a whole different world.“
Her inspiration in music comes from artists like Lilly Allen, Ingrid Michelson and Sarah Bareilles. “My music is definitely a retro-pop, really different type of genre of music. I really like people who do different things with their voices so if you are listening on the radio and you hear a song on, you’re like ‘Oh I totally know who that is, that’s Lilly Allen’ or something like that. I think it’s something really special that people can pick you out right away when they hear you sing,” she confessed.
Justine realizes that her debut album is going to be something different than what people will expect out of a girl her age. “I realized how different my album was going to sound,” she shares with us. “All of my songs are like butterflies, no two are alike.” Her goal was to give her listeners a variety of music that they have never heard before - from dancing songs, to theatrical splashy songs, to rock ballads - this album is sure to impress and give everyone something to listen to.
Writing music has become another one of Justine’s passions and helped in the delivery of her soon-to-be-hit-single “English Rose,” which she composed totally on her own and is something that she is very proud of. She explained the process she went through when coming up with the song. The part she seemed to place most value on was the lyrics and how her lyrics could connect to someone else. “I think it’s indescribable; it’s really amazing for me that I have that experience. I have listened to a song where I felt such a strong connection, and to know that some girl out there might hear one of my songs and totally understand what my song means and that I totally relate to what she is going through, I think that is one of the most amazing things about being a songwriter.” This single plus many other great tracks can be found on Justin’s debut album scheduled for release at the end of the year.
Other than her music, Justine loves her re-occurring role as actor Rob Lowe's daughter, Sophie McCallister. Being introduced to the show through her younger sister, who currently stars on the show, Justine read the script, loved the character and sought after the part. She has also loved being a part of the American Girl Cast playing her personal favorite American Girl, Kirsten, and performing at the historical Hollywood Bowl playing Bergita in the Sound of Music. Justine’s natural knack for acting and gifted vocals has led her to be well rounded in all aspects of the entertainment world.
Justine may be just your average girl who loves to shop at Forever 21, is in to everything vintage, loves fashion, understands the heartaches of school, and boys, but she has chased her dreams and put everything she has learned and experienced into those dreams to create her wonderful career! Look for Justine’s album to come out sometime this year and check some of her music out on her MySpace page!
